Dragon Sports rip roaring initiative
HUNDREDS of Carmarthenshire pupils are competing against each other in organised decathlon championships.
Carmarthenshire Council’s Dragon Sport Team is spearheading the project as part of an ongoing drive to encourage children and young people to get involved in sports and leisure.
Mini tournaments are underway at schools across the county as part of a major sports and exercise project.
Every primary school in Carmarthenshire has been invited to submit a team of five girls and five boys.
Events are being held in Ammanford, Carmarthen, Llandovery, Llanelli, the Gwendraeth Valley, Newcastle Emlyn, Whitland and Llandeilo.
Pupils are competing in 10 sports including long jump, speed bounce, target throw, vertical jump, shuttle run and soft javelin.
Scores will be added up and the competition will climax in a grand final in Carmarthen on March 24th where winners of each local round will take part.
County executive board member for leisure services said: “The Dragon Sports team are doing sterling work in all our schools introducing sports of all kinds.
“It is an inspired initiative.
“Many children would not have the chance of trying their hand at unusual sports like fencing as well as many of the main-steam sports opportunities without the help of multi qualified Dragon Sports team.”
