Learning disability is one of the most common forms of disability in the UK. It is also the least understood. There are 1.4 million people in the UK who have a Learning Disability.
A learning disability is a lifelong condition acquired before, during or soon after birth. This affects an individual’s ability to learn, it is not an illness.
The causes of many learning disabilities are not known, but the most common examples are Down’s Syndrome and Autism.
People with a learning disability find it more difficult to learn and understand than other people. This means that some people need support with everyday practical skills like getting dressed or cooking, or social skills. Other people with more severe learning disabilities that can often be coupled with physical disabilities, require 24-hour care.
Learning Disabilities Services:
Our aim is to enable people to live as independently as possible.
It’s important to understand that people with a learning disability are individuals with unique personalities, likes and dislikes, goals and aspirations. A learning disability does not prevent someone from learning and achieving a lot in life, if given the right support.
Specialist teams assess peoples’ needs and arrange support services, for individuals and their families.
A range of options are available to suit specific needs, including:
- Transition Service
- Day services
- Supported Employment, both voluntary and paid
- Respite Care
- Total Communication
- Person Centred Planning
