Affordable housing is good quality housing for rent or for sale, at rents or sale prices which are within the reach of most local families.
We want to help as many local people as possible to find homes that meet their needs. This means we will use every means we have of providing affordable homes.
We also make sure that homes remain affordable at all future sales or for new tenants. For affordable homes for sale, this is done by a legal agreement which first and all future buyers must sign before they can buy the home. For homes for rent, the affordable rent will be safeguarded either by a legal agreement or by being owned and managed by a housing association.
What is the Council doing to help?
We are delivering affordable housing in Carmarthenshire by:
- making Council-owned land available for affordable housing
- using our planning powers to make sure that private housing developments have a percentage of new homes for sale or rent to local people at affordable prices
- working with housing associations to increase the number of new homes for rent and for sale
- promoting subsidies for families on low incomes to help them buy homes through the Homebuy scheme
- making sure that homes bought under the Right-to-Buy scheme in rural areas are only resold to local families
- supporting communities to set up community land trusts
- promoting community self-build
- making it easier for people to apply for affordable housing.
