Safer Routes in Communities

Safer Routes in Communities is a programme that aims to create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists through the implementation of engineering measures such as cycle routes, cycle paths and traffic calming. A consequence of these measures is a shift away from car use for certain journeys, which results in reduced levels of congestion, improved local air quality and an improved street scene.

In 2008, the Safer Routes in Communities programme replaced the Safe Routes to School initiative, although schools remain part of the new initiative.

Aim
The aim is to change how people travel, resulting in greater social inclusion and improved community safety. Safer Routes in the Community projects improve road safety and reduce accidents, improve children & adult’s health and development, reduce traffic congestion and pollution, and helps create a community environment.

Community Involvement
Safer Routes in the community projects can involve the whole community working together to encourage people to walk or cycle to local facilities and public transport connections. Schools, local residents, local authorities, health and education workers, Police and local businesses can all get involved to create a safer, cleaner environment.

Actions
