Travel Planning

Carmarthenshire County Council is currently in the process of developing a Staff Travel Plan for those employees who are based at the St. David's site on Job's Well Road.

It is hoped that this will be the first step towards developing a Travel Plan to cover the whole of Carmarthenshire County Council.

So what is a Travel Plan?

A Travel Plan is a package of measures aimed at promoting sustainable travel within an organisation, with an emphasis on reducing reliance on single occupancy car travel.

Why produce a Travel Plan?

There are a number of reasons as to why an organisations goes about developing a Travel Plan, including:

  • To reduce CO2 emissions
  • To reduce congestion
  • To increase parking resources
  • To improve staff retention
  • To reduce travel costs both for the organisations and for the individual

And how is Carmarthenshire County Council going about developing the Travel Plan?

A team of officers has been put together to explore ways of developing more sustainable methods of transport for the users of the site. Initially tasked with developing a Travel Plan for the St. David's site, the approach, method and potential solutions they develop will act as a model for the whole Authority.

The team have already held a Travel Planning Fair in Parc Dewi Sant in November, in association with their partners, and invited all staff on the site to come along and get involved in the discussions.

A travel questionnaire was distributed to all St. David's site staff with regards to their current methods of travel and their potential interest in more sustainable methods of travel. The high response rate received highlighted the interest in the agenda and produced useful data that went on to inform the development of an action plan.

The action plan is now the basis for the development of the actual Travel Planning document as well as a means of monitoring the ongoing work that the team is undertaking to promote sustainable travel.

If you have any questions with regards to the travel planning process, please contact a member of the team.
